Today, the Prime Minister outlined his plans to put Britain “at the heart of Europe.”
This is particularly concerning for our corner of Lincolnshire, as in 2016 many of you voted strongly to leave the European Union.
The last Conservative Government honoured the referendum result and delivered Brexit. We ended freedom of movement and secured the freedom to make our own laws, negotiate our own trade deals and chart our own path on the international stage.
But now, this Government is attempting to make Britain a “rule-taker” rather than a “rule-maker.” By seeking closer alignment with Brussels, Labour is ignoring the 2016 referendum result and the clear mandate we have to control our own borders and laws.
While families struggle with the cost-of-living crisis and higher taxes, the Prime Minister is surrendering our sovereignty.
He, or whoever replaces him, needs to be honest with people about their plans, explain why these negotiations are needed, set out their red lines, and refuse to give Brussels a blank cheque from British taxpayers.
The Conservatives will oppose any deal that betrays the British people.
