Victoria Reacts to NWS Changing the "Area of Focus" for a Nuclear Waste Dump in Lincolnshire

I have opposed the threat of a nuclear waste dump on the Lincolnshire Coast since the proposal came to light several years ago. In that time, residents have had to live with the uncertainty, worry and financial costs of having this monstrous carbuncle threatened in their area.

Today, Nuclear Waste Services have finally published their update on their “area of focus” with regards to the potential siting of a nuclear waste dump on our coastline. It shifts the location for the above-ground site further inland.

NWS are now looking at the land to the north of the A157, south-west of Gayton wind farm, between the villages of Gayton le Marsh and Great Carlton.

This news will be very distressing for the residents in and around this area. Rest assured that I will be meeting NWS in the coming week to continue to put pressure on them to move their focus away from Lincolnshire entirely.

This change in focus will mean a potential site being less than five miles from the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and could now be closer to the historic town of Louth than it is to the coast where the waste would actually be stored. I have been against these proposals since the beginning and this latest move has only strengthened my resolve.

With an area of focus now being identified, I am again calling for a public vote on this within the year. Local people must be able to set their own destiny and to have certainty.

NWS are holding consultation events on this in the coming days. I encourage everyone in the local area affected by these plans to attend these events and make your feelings known. These are taking place at:

• Gayton le Marsh Village Hall, Monday 3 February, 3-7PM

• Strubby, Beesby and Maltby Village Hall, Tuesday 4 February, 3-7PM

• Great Carlton Village Hall, Wednesday 5 February, 3-7PM

• Withern Village Hall, Friday 14 February, 3-7PM

• Theddlethorpe Village Hall, Saturday 15 February, 12- 3,30PM

• Legbourne Village Hall, Sunday 16 February, 12-3.30PM

• Grimoldby & Manby Village Hall, Thursday 20 February, 3-7PM

• Louth Town Football Club, Friday 21 February, 3-7PM
